We have been taught by fairy-tales and ‘Feel good’ films to associate the term “soul mate” with one person; the one we are destined to meet by the hands of fate. From there, we fall madly in love and stay under its spell forever. In cold reality the fact is, love is not enough. All those fairy-tales, all those stories and movies you’ve heard and watched growing up, might have lied to you. Love is never enough because love is not rational and actually hard work from two individuals.

I used to believe; months, years, miles and oceans can put distance between you and your soul mate, but that distance is merely physical. The minute you are reunited, it will be like picking up where you last left off.

In the case of soul mates, absence does really make the heart grow fonder because, without them, a little part of us is missing. It does not matter that they have been in our lives for 10 days or 10 years. The moment we discover a soul mate, it is like he or she had been a part of our lives since day one.

Soul mates rely on each other to grow as individuals, which is ironic, but incredible. The best kinds of relationships are the ones that make us better not only when we are together, but also when we are separated.

However, you do rely on your soul mate to feel the same. Sometimes you are lucky and he/she does, more often you/he/she is settling for the situation because its comfortable and in the better but momentarily more hurtful situation of speaking out the truth it is like you’re walking on solid ground one moment and fall into pitch black ice-water the next.

You start doubting everything you had. If he/she wasn’t your soul mate how could it have felt so real? How could you have been so mistaken? Did he/she ever truly loved you? How can he/she move on so quickly? …

I don’t know. I am still treading water……

What do you think?:
